Dandelion’s most cherished holiday tradition has returned. In this year’s Advent Calendar, you'll unbox twenty-five individual, giftable, chocolate-box “ornaments,” each containing a serving of surprise confections — such as a bonbon, a caramel, or several chocolate-covered nuts — created by one of twenty-five acclaimed chocolatiers from coast to coast.

This year's theme, Dark Skies, Bright Stars, is a collaboration with astronomer and artist Dr. Tyler Nordgren, and offers a special focus on twenty-five celestial events, as viewed from DarkSky-certified viewing locations in the northern hemisphere.

Watch this page for more details; as the holidays become closer, we’ll continue to update with more information about our collaborators and their confections.

Why Are Dark Night Skies So Important?

Dark Sky

The Dark Sky Movement is a global initiative striving to reduce light pollution, which obscures the natural night sky and degrades ecosystems through the disruption of biological rhythms in nature.

Since the creation of the National Park Service, a foundational concept was the idea that preserving wildness and solitude is an important component of a healthy society. Dark sky places not only help prevent the deterioration of natural ecosystems as a result of artificial light, but also provide a place for reflection, soothing, and peace.

Why Are Dark Night Skies So Important?

The Dark-Sky Movement is a global initiative that strives to reduce light pollution, which obscures the natural night sky and degrades ecosystems through the disruption of biological rhythms in nature. The notion that preserving wilderness and solitude is an important component of a healthy society has been a foundational concept of the U.S. National Park Service since its inception in 1916. Dark-sky locations not only help prevent the deterioration of natural ecosystems as a result of artificial light, but also provide a place for reflection and peace.

Dr. Tyler Nordgren

Artist and Astronomer

When visiting a U.S. National Park, you might see pop-art posters proclaiming, "Half the Park Is After Dark™." These images were designed by astronomer and artist Dr. Tyler Nordgren, who uses art to educate people about the Dark-Sky Movement. (His posters' vintage style is inspired by 1930s Work Projects Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps posters.) For over a decade, Dr. Nordgren has supported the National Park Service in its goal to be the largest public source of science and astronomy education in the world.

Dr. Nordgren's book, Stars Above, Earth Below: A Guide to Astronomy in the National Parks, tours park visitors through unique features of each park’s night sky. His artwork has been displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, NASA Headquarters, and the White House. Nordgren also helped design the Mars-adapted sundials ("Marsdials") carried by NASA's Mars rovers; and he conducts astronomy tours to view northern lights in Alaska, dark skies in the Grand Canyon, and solar eclipses worldwide.
